John Dahl, the director of the neo film noir modern classics Kill Me Again, Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, comes a cropper this time with this, ironically, totally forgettable 1996 sci-fi mystery thriller.
Ray Liotta’s run of bad luck continues with his role as Dr David Krane, who after being framed for his wife’s murder, takes a drug to experience other people’s memories so he can uncover the identity of the killer. Bill Geddie’s silly, unconvincing and unsurprising yarn doesn’t even work on its own preposterous, artificial terms and the good actors appear to have more or less given up.
Dahl has no real chance to hit his stride as director, and Linda Fiorentino, so great in his The Last Seduction, is wasted here in an underwritten role as Martha Briggs. The audience could have told Liottta whodunit very early on and without recourse to a wonder drug. However, a sleeping drug might be helpful.
Christopher McDonald, David Paymer, Duncan Fraser, Caroline Elliott, Colleen Rennison, Kim Cattrall, Stellina Rusich and Kim Coates co-star.
The admirable Dahl went on to make the excellent Rounders and Road Kill. Fiorentino went on to make Men in Black (1997) and Dogma (1999).
