Police Academy 3: Back in Training ** (1986, Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, George Gaynes, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey) – Classic Movie Review 8341

The topical theme of budget cutbacks threatening the closure of the academy is a solid enough base for director Jerry Paris’s 1986 Police Academy 3: Back in Training, the rickety second sequel to the 1984 hit comedy Police Academy.

In Gene Quintano’s screenplay, the bumbling bobbies must compete with a rival academy when only one school is allowed to survive.

Series regulars Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, George Gaynes, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey and Leslie Easterbrook all return, but this episode gains some new characters, adding a slight air of freshness to stifle your sense of déjà vu.

Police Academy 3: Back in Training is slightly funnier than Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, but performances and jokes are still at a low level for a hit series.

It is written by Gene Quintano, based on the characters created by Neal Israel and Pat Proft.

It is followed by Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987).
