The Castaway Cowboy ** (1974, James Garner, Vera Miles, Robert Culp, Eric Shea) – Classic Movie Review 12,865

Director Vincent McEveety’s 1974 Walt Disney Productions American Western comedy film The Castaway Cowboy stars James Garner, Vera Miles, Robert Culp, and Eric Shea.

Hawaiian potato farmer Henrietta MacAvoy (Miles) and her son Little Maca (Shea) rescue kidnapped Texan cowboy, Lincoln Costain (Garner), who battles her bad guy rich creditor and suitor Calvin Byron (Culp) and helps mom and son to start a successful wild cattle ranch on the island instead.

Disney’s pleasant re-teaming of Garner and Miles from their 1973 Disney Western comedy One Little Indian is small-time entertainment, but boasts attractive performances, a cosily familiar yarn and eye-catching shooting in Hawaii. Indeed, Garner recalled that the best thing in the film was the Hawaiian scenery.

Also in the cast are Elizabeth Smith, Manu Tupou, Gregory Sierra, Shug Fisher, Nephi Hannemann, Lito Capina, Ralph Hanalei, Kahana, Lee Woodd, Luis Delgado, Buddy Joe Hooker, and Patrick Sullivan Burke.

Don Tait’s screenplay is based on the story by Don Tait, Richard M Bluel, and Hugh Benson.

The Castaway Cowboy runs 91 minutes, is made by Walt Disney Productions, is distributed by Buena Vista Distribution, is shot by Andrew Jackson, is produced by Ron Miller and Winston Hibler, and is scored by Robert F Brunner.

Release date: August 1, 1974.
