Marlon Wayans follows up his hit 2013 spoof scary movie with more of the same, but a lot worse. He again stars as Malcolm, who makes a fresh start by moving in with his new girlfriend Megan (Jaime Pressly) and her two children.
Paranormal activity inevitably ensues, and a devil doll appears, entrancing Wayans to have incredible sex with it. Then his back-from-the-dead ex, Kisha (Essence Atkins), moves into the neighbourhood.
Wayans works hard and is an appealing, adroit comedy performer – a funny man, up for anything to raise a laugh. That’s the best thing about A Haunted House 2. And dirty though a lot of the gags are, the film’s harmless, though there are far too many of the same kind of sex and race jokes.
The rest of the cast are up for it too. The sweet Pressly’s funny when her dialogue lets her be, Gabriel Iglesias is amusing as the neighbour Miguel and Cedric the Entertainer would be funny if he had anything funny to do or say as the local priest, Father Williams.
The problem is of course the tired old script, co-written by Wayans with Rick Alvarez. They’ve just run out of ideas – no wonder after all the Scary Movies and their own A Haunted House. After half way, the laughs just completely dry up in this smutty and eventually boring sequel. No more, Marlon, please!
