‘Man and Women. Living proof that God has a sense of humour.’
Writer-director Alan Alda’s 1988 romantic comedy A New Life came straight out on video in Britain, although it deserved a cinema release.
Alda writes, directs and stars as Steve Giardino, a white-bearded, selfish, middle-aged stockbroker who has a tough time trying to start a new life with blind dates and awkward relationships after he reluctantly divorces Jackie Giardino (Ann-Margret).
The pleasing stars get good acting support (Hal Linden, Veronica Hamel, John Shea, Mary Kay Place, Beatrice Alda) and, even if the film does not cut very deep, it is warm-hearted, enjoyable, civilised entertainment.
Beatrice Alda, as Judy, is the daughter of Alan Alda.
Also in the cast are David Eisner, Victoria Snow, John Kozak, Alan Jordan, Tim Koetting, Catherine Disher, Alec Mapa, Malcolm Stewart, Barry Flatman, Vince Metcalfe, Cynthia Belliveau, Michele Duquet, C David Johnson, Michael Kirby, Celia Weston, and Paul Hecht.
