The likeable Saturday Night Live comics Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell do their best to raise laughs as Doug and Steve Butabi, the sad, pathetic, dim-wit brothers whose bid to get into the town’s hippest disco joint is what passes for a plot in the script by Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan and Steve Koren.
There are a few funny moments in director John Fortenberry’s 1998 comedy, but there is about a tenth of the gags that are needed here even in this short, under-nourished running time of 82 minutes.
Gigi Rice and Elisa Donovan play gold-diggers Vivica and Cambi, who find Doug and Steve are penniless losers. Richard Grieco tries to revive his career by gamely playing himself. Chazz Palminteri has an unbilled cameo as Mr Zadir, the owner of the Roxbury disco joint.
Also in the cast are Raquel Gardner, Molly Shannon, Dan Hedaya, Viveca Paulin, Paulette Braxton, Michael M Horton, Richard Francese, Jennifer Coolidge, Michael Clarke Duncan, Loni Anderson, Dwayne Hickman, Lochlyn Munro, and Colin Quinn.
A Night at the Roxbury is a S N L Studios production, released by Paramount, shot by Francis Kenny, produced by Amy Heckerling and Lorne Michaels, scored by David Kitay and designed by Steven J Jordan.
