Director Robert Altman’s zany 1979 romantic comedy A Perfect Couple is appealing and effervescent movie, in which the repressed, middle-aged, divorced Greek-American cook/ antique dealer Alex Theodopoulos (Paul Dooley) is computer-dated with much younger rock group manager Sheila Shea (Marta Heflin), who does not enjoy her food.
He becomes smitten, but eventually they decide that they are incompatible, and split up, but then they meet again by chance. A Perfect Couple?
As a movie, A Perfect Couple connects, thanks to the bubbly, witty screenplay (co-written by Altman with Allan F Nicholls), Altman’s deft handling, and the engaging Dooley’s warm performance.
Also in the cast are Titos Vandis, Belita Moreno, Henry Gibson, Dimitra Arliss, Ted Neeley, Allan F Nicholls, Ann Ryerson, Poppy Lagos, Dennis Franz, Margery Bond, Mona Golabek, Terry Wills, Susan Blake, Melanie Bishop, Fred Bier, Jette Seear, Heather MacRae, Tomi-Lee Bradley and Steven Sharp.
Altman made this in the same year as his Quintet with Paul Newman.
