A Rage to Live ** (1965, Suzanne Pleshette, Bradford Dillman, Ben Gazzara, Peter Graves) – Classic Movie Review 13,178

Suzanne Pleshette stars as a woman whose voracious passions wreak havoc, in the 1965 American drama film A Rage to Live, based on a novel by John O’Hara.

Director Walter Grauman’s 1965 American drama film A Rage to Live is based on a 1949 bestseller novel by John O’Hara, and stars Suzanne Pleshette, Bradford Dillman, Ben Gazzara, and Peter Graves.

The normally delightful Suzanne Pleshette falters in her part as Grace Caldwell, a woman who struggles through school and her marriage to Sidney Tate (Bradford Dillman), afflicted by her voracious appetite for promiscuous sex.

This trashy, slickly filmed soap opera is often entertaining enough, though it says nothing new and soon becomes tiresome with its cardboard characters, cheap dialogue and repetitive plotting.

The cast are Suzanne Pleshette as Grace Caldwell Tate, Bradford Dillman as Sidney Tate, Ben Gazzara as Roger Bannon, Peter Graves as Jack Hollister, Bethel Leslie as Amy Hollister, Carmen Mathews as Emily Caldwell, Linden Chiles as Brock Caldwell, Ruth White as Mrs Bannon, Mark Goddard as Charlie Jay, Sarah Marshall as Connie, George Furth as Paul Rutherford, Virginia Christine as Emma, and Brett Somers.

Film rights were bought in 1959 by the Mirisch Corporation, who had a deal with United Artists. In July 1963 John T Kelly was working on the screenplay, by May 1964 Lewis J Rachmill was assigned to produce, filming started on 1 June 1964, and it was released on October 20, 1965 in New York City.
