Director Larry Parr’s conscientious, well-acted, low-key, touching little 1989 World War Two romantic drama A Soldier’s Tale is based on the novel by M K Joseph.
Gabriel Byrne stars as British soldier Saul who befriends and falls in love with French woman Belle (Marianne Basler), whom the French Resistance thinks is a Nazi sympathiser.
It is shot in Normandy, France.
The supervising sound editor John McKay’s soundtrack is a notable award-winner. Music, cinematography, and production design are all well taken care of.
Also in the cast are Judge Reinhold, Paul Wyett, Benoît Régent, Jacques Mathou, Bernard Farcy, Roch Leibovici, Claude Mann, Mathew Byam Shaw, David Duffy, Nicolas Tronc, Véronique Müller, Claudine Berg, Philippe Le Mercier, Eric Galliano and Andrew Herman.
