Director Craig R Baxley’s 1988 hard-hitting action movie Action Jackson stars Carl Weathers as the off-beat do-gooder Action Jackson, a tough Detroit cop leaving a trail of devastation behind him as he rampages after superbad guy Peter Dellaplane (Craig T Nelson), a murderous, power-crazed and just plain crazy car magnate.
It is all a bit predictable, but there are plenty of stunts and riotous action scenes to keep things going when the plot peters out. Ex-Prince protégé Vanity plays Sydney Ash, a sleazy chanteuse who teams up with Weathers, and Sharon Stone co-stars as Patrice Dellaplane. The writer is Robert Reneau. It is a robust, violent, fast-moving and exciting movie typical of its canny producer Joel Silver.
Also in the cast are Thomas F Wilson, Bill Duke, Robert Davi, Jack Thibeau, Roger Aaron Brown, Stan Foster, Ed O’Ross and Arnelia McQueen.
Action Jackson is directed by Craig R Baxley, runs 96 minutes, is made by Lorimar Film Entertainment and Silver Pictures, is released by Lorimar Film Entertainment (1988) (US) and PolyGram (UK) and Guild Home Video (1988) (UK), is written by Robert Reneau, is shot by Matthew F Leonetti, is produced by Joel Silver and is scored by Herbie Hancock.
It cost $7 million and grossed more than $20 million in the US.
