Director Griffin Dunne’s 1997 comedy stars Matthew Broderick as Sam, who follows his errant girlfriend Linda (Kelly Preston) to New York, where he’s understandably upset to find her in bed with Frenchman Anton (Tcheky Karyo), apparently in love.
Broderick takes a room to live across the road, spying on her to plot to get her back. Then Karyo’s vengeful ex-girlfriend Maggie (Meg Ryan) appears on the scene and the two join forces to wreak havoc and break up the happy couple.
Broderick and Ryan give expert turns in this weird, uncomfy but sporadically very amusing black comedy, with plenty of deliberate bad taste in the mix as well as considerable real wit.
