‘He’s always on call for this sort of job!’
Director Stanley A Long’s 1978 Adventures of a Plumber’s Mate is the third of three turgid Seventies British sex comedies, in the Confessions of… style, with Christopher Neil back as randy plumber’s mate Sid South, re-creating his role in 1977’s Adventures of a Private Eye (where he was called Bob West) and taking over from Barry Evans as Joe North in the original 1975 Adventures of a Taxi Driver.
It co-stars Arthur Mullard, Anna Quayle, Stephen Lewis, Nina West William Rushton and Christopher Biggins.
Among the friendly cast, future musicals stage star Elaine Paige has a tiny role as ‘Daisy’ (end-credits), though she is referred to in the film as ‘Susie’.
It is written by Aubrey Cash and Stephen D Frances.
It is Neil’s last film to date. It is Mullard’s last film. It is Paige’s first credited film role, though she played an Urchin (uncredited) in Oliver! She allegedly tried to have her name removed from the advertisements for the film after she found fame on stage in Evita.
Also in the cast are John Bott, Richard Caldicot, Peter Cleall, Leon Greene, Kim Fortune, Prudence Drage, Graham Ashley, Jonathan Adams, Neville Barber, Lindy Benson, Dave Carter, Angela Daniels, Claire Davenport, Christine Donna, Linda Hartley, Mark Henry, Suzy Mandel, Derek Marti, Elaine Paige, Stephen Riddle, Vicki Scott, Jerold Wells, Tessa Skola, William Whymper, Teresa Wood and John Wyman.
It was released in British cinemas with an X certificate.
Apparently Rushton replaced Jimmy Edwards at a late stage.
