Director Jodie Copelan’s 1958 black and white Western film Ambush at Cimarron Pass stars Scott Brady as Sergeant Matt Blake, who, along with his US Cavalry troop, have their work cut out escorting a prisoner to the fort through Apache territory.
His troubles include a clash with Keith Williams (Clint Eastwood) over Teresa Santos (Margia Dean), and also the troop is carrying a shipment of rifles the Indians are after.
Ambush at Cimarron Pass is a Fifties conveyor-belt Western, mechanically written, performed with little flair, and made with no special style or imagination.
Yet it is not too bad of its very humble kind, though a still career-struggling Clint bitterly called it ‘the worst Western ever made’.
It is written by Richard G Taylor and John K Butler, based on a story by Robert A Reeds and Robert W Woods.
Also in the cast are Irving Bacon, Frank Gerstle, Ray Boyle [Dick London], Baynes Barron, William Vaughn, Ken Mayer, John Damler, Keith Richards, John Frederick [John Merrick], Desmond Slattery and Charles Soldani.
Ambush at Cimarron Pass is directed by Jodie Copelan, runs 73 minutes, is made by Regal Films, is released by 20th Century Fox, is written by Richard G Taylor and John K Butler, based on a story by Robert A Reeds and Robert W Woods, is shot in black and white by John M Nickolaus Jr, is produced by Herbert E Mendelson, is scored by Paul Sawdell and Bert Shefter, with production designs by John B Mansbridge.
