Michael Palin stars as the Reverend Francis Ashby, an Oxford don, who meets two holiday-making American girls in Switzerland, Miss Caroline Hartley (Connie Booth) and her companion Miss Elinor Hartley (Trini Alvarado), who proceed to visit him unannounced at his university and upset the strict formality of the place.
Director Tristram Powell’s 1991 romantic comedy drama American Friends is an enjoyable, if slight yarn from a successful screenplay by ex-Python Michael Palin, based on his own grandfather’s secret diaries.
It is typically British, with lovely locations, sensitive acting, good dialogue, interesting situations and characters, and very little plot.
Also in the cast are Alfred Molina, David Calder, Bryan Pringle, Fred Pearson, Susan Denaker, Ian Dunn, Robert Eddison, Simon Jones, Charles McKeown, Roger Lloyd Pack, John Nettleton, Alun Armstrong, Sheila Reid, Jimmy Jewel, Wensley Pithey, Arthur Howard, Charles Simon.
