The loveable American Pie characters are back for a typically gross and bawdy but warm-hearted and raucously funny third instalment. It’s remarkable that original screenwriter Adam Herz manages to write a third fresh and fun screenplay.
When Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) decide to marry, the pie guys — Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Stifler (Seann William Scott) turn up to upset the apple cart. Michelle invites her knockout sister Cadence (January Jones) as maid of honour, prompting the sex-mad Stifler to hatch a plot to woo her.
It’s hilarious when the supposedly rampantly heterosexual Stifler goes to a gay club, lets a dog eat the wedding ring, teaches Jim to dance and kills all the wedding flowers. Biggs and Hannigan re-create their likeable performances, but they seem a little restrained by the whole wedding idea, leaving outstanding comedy players Scott and Eugene Levy (as Jim’s dad) to enjoy the most uproarious moments in this mucky but happy frolic.
Jennifer Coolidge is very funny as Stifler’s sexy mom, so why don’t they give her more to do? Alas, there’s no Chris Klein this time. But, happily. everyone returned for American Pie the Reunion in 2012.
