An American Werewolf in Paris ** (1997, Tom Everett Scott, Julie Delpy) – Classic Movie Review 2519

Co-writer/co-producer/director Anthony Waller’s long-awaited 1997 follow-up to John Landis’s1981 An American Werewolf in London proves a bit of a damp squib. Tom Everett Scott stars as young American Andy who is over in Paris, where he falls for ethereal beauty Serafine (Julie Delpy). Unfortunately she turns out to be a werewolf, who soon takes a loving bite out of him.

[Spoiler alert] She is the daughter of the werewolf from An American Werewolf in London, living in Paris where her mother from the first film and stepfather are trying to overcome her lycanthropic disease.

With tone and plot problems, the film also finds its promising enough setup and storyline fizzle out fast, and the hoped-for gory werewolf horror takes a back seat to daft comedy, exactly as John Landis avoided in the original.

However, the likeable Scott and Delpy are well cast, appealing and try hard. But the movie just hasn’t got what it takes, merely re-affirming the brilliance of the original. A sequel to that would have been much more promising and welcome.

Writer-producer-director Anthony Waller has a cameo playing a Métro driver. Also in the cast are Vince Vieluf, Phil Buckman, Julie Bowen, Pierre Cosso, Thierry Lhermitte, Tom Novembre, Maria Machado and Ben Salem Bouabdallah.
