Director Peter Yates’s 1989 action crime thriller An Innocent Man stars Tom Selleck as the innocent man Jimmie Rainwood, framed for drugs by two crooked cops, who finds himself in jail, where the going gets even tougher, until fellow con Virgil Cane (F Murray Abraham) hatches a plan. Once out, Jimmie Rainwood comes after the cops.
An Innocent Man is a very violent, plain and rather ordinary thriller, averagely written by Larry Brothers and directed by Yates, who needs classier material but still keeps the action moving fast to paper over the cracks.
Also in the cast are Laila Robins, David Rasche, Richard Young, Badja Djola, Todd Graff, M C Gainey, Peter Van Norden, Bruce A Young, James T Morris, Terry Golden, and Dennis Burkley.
The talented crew helps, especially cinematographer William A Fraker and score writer Howard Shore.
The TV version uses alternate takes of scenes, with less violence and milder language.
It grossed a very modest $20,047,604.
