Another Time, Another Place ** (1958, Lana Turner, Barry Sullivan, Glynis Johns, Sean Connery) – Classic Movie Review 10,483

Director Lewis Allen’s 1958 British romantic drama Another Time, Another Place brings together Lana Turner and Sean Connery, along with a series of home-grown comedy stalwarts, including Sidney James, Doris Hare, John le Mesurier, Robin Bailey, and Bill Fraser.

Young BBC war correspondent reporter Mark Trevor (Connery) is in love with both Sara Scott (Turner) and his wife Kay Trevor (Glynis Johns) in a wartime weepie. Turner plays an American newswoman in Britain who embarks on a fling with married Connery, whose death in action plunges her into a breakdown and removes the movie’s most vital personality. It is up to Sara Scott then to return to Mark Trevor’s hometown to console Kay Trevor.

The prepossessing cast cannot raise too much lather from the soapy screenplay by Stanley Mann, based on a novel by Lenore J Coffee, filmed at a reverential pace.

Also in the cast are Sidney James, Terence Longdon, Doris Hare, John le Mesurier, Robin Bailey, Bill Fraser, Martin Stephens, Julian Somers, Cameron Hall and Jane Welsh.

Another Time, Another Place is directed by Lewis Allen, runs 98 minutes (UK version) or 91 minutes, is made by Kaydor Productions and Lanturn, is released by Paramount, is written by Stanley Mann, based on a novel by Lenore J Coffee, is shot in black and white by Jack Hildyard, is produced by Lewis Allen, Joe Kaufmann and E M Smedley-Aston and is scored by Douglas Gamley, with Art Direction by Thomas N Morahan.

The raincoats are by Aquascutum of London and the orchestra is The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO).

It is shot at Looe and Polperro, in Cornwall, and at MGM British Studios, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England.

During the shooting of the movie in England, Connery was confronted by Turner’s jealous mob bodyguard boyfriend Johnny Stompanato, who stormed onto the set, threatening him with a gun and warning him to keep away from Turner. Connery bent back Stompanato’s hand and forced him to drop the gun. Stompanato was reported to the police and deported from the UK. Later on 4 April 1958, Stompanato was stabbed to death by Turner’s 14-year-old daughter Cheryl Crane at Turner’s Beverly Hills home. A coroner’s inquest decided it was justifiable homicide after she claimed that Stompanato had been violently attacking her mother.
