Bachelor Party ** (1984, Tom Hanks, Tawny Kitaen, Adrian Zmed, George Grizzard, Wendie Jo Sperber, Michael Dudikoff) – Classic Movie Review 3133

Co-writer-director Neal Israel’s 1984 comedy showcases the young Tom Hanks, then aged 28 and on his way to super-stardom, who leads a smutty, not very funny film about an accident-prone bachelor party.

Not even the talented and amusing comic Hanks can do anything very much to improve things as Rick Gassko, the bridegroom whose friends throw the bachelor party of all bachelor parties, enraging his fiancée Debbie Thompson (Tawny Kitaen) and her father Ed (George Grizzard) and mother (Barbara Stuart), both of whom hate him. Naturally, when the friends decide to give him the party in an expensive hotel with booze, adult movies and hookers, things get out of hand.

With a story by producer Bob Israel and the screenplay written by Neal Israel with Pat Proft, this is a silly teen and 20something farce offering a few small chuckles, along with much 18 certificate-style swearing and nudity. It was inspired by the actual bachelor party thrown for Bob Israel.

Also in the cast are Adrian Zmed, Wendie Jo Sperber, Michael Dudikoff, Robert Prescott, William Tepper, Gary Grossman and Tracy Smith.

Neal Israel is also known as the writer of Police Academy (1984), Moving Violations (1985), Real Genius (1985) and Look Who’s Talking Too (1990).

Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation (2008) was intended to be a remake but was released as a sequel.
