‘They Holed Up In Hell!’
Director John Brahm’s 1955 adventure Bengazi is low-budget adventure crime drama malarkey, based on a story by Jeff Bailey, in which a murky international trio (Richard Conte, Victor McLaglen and Richard Erdman) look for Gestapo gold hidden by Arab tribesmen in the African sands.
We look for gold in the script by Louis Vittes and Endre Bohem, but find dross instead. Bengazi is a cheap and cheerless action adventure, with lots of mugging by desperate-looking performers.
Also in the cast are Richard Carlson, Mala Powers, Hillary Brooke, Maurice Hill [Maury Hill], Jay Novello, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez [Gonzales Gonzales], Albert Carrier, and Eileen Rowe.
Bengazi is shot in black and white and SuperScope.
It is shot in Yuma, Arizona, and Imperial County, California.
Roy Webb, who had been with RKO since 1929, provides his last score for the studio.
