Belgian writer-director André Delvaux assembles a strong cast for the 1983 film Benvenuta, his skilful, stylish but finally puzzling romance about a film writer called François (Mathieu Carrière) who digs out a reclusive novelist called Benvenuta (Fanny Ardant) who was perhaps writing about herself in her book about an affair of 20 years earlier.
The still handsome Vittorio Gassman plays Ardant’s ardent lover, Livio Carpi.
Delvaux’s screenplay is based on the novel La Confession Anonyme by Suzanne Lilar.
Also in the cast are Françoise Fabian, Claire Wauthion, Philippe Geluck and Anne Chappuis.
It is filmed in French and is a Belgium / France / Italy co-production.
André Delvaux (1926–2002) is best known for The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short (1966), Un soir, un train (1966) and Rendezvous at Bray (1971).
