‘He Lived Thru A Nazi Nightmare You’ll Never Forget!’
Director Eugene Forde’s 1942 wartime propaganda thriller Berlin Correspondent tells the amusingly daft tale of a US radio correspondent broadcaster Bill Roberts (Dana Andrews) in Berlin who sends coded messages back home.
Gestapo Captain Carl Von Rau (Martin Kosleck) assigns his fiancée, Nazi spy Karen Hauen (Virginia Gilmore), to track the source of his information down, that is until she finds out that it is her father (Erwin Kalser) who is giving Andrews the information. The old man is being sent to a concentration camp, and then Karen appeals to Roberts for help. Of course then good old Roberts, now in love with Karen, has to put himself in peril so that they can all escape from Germany.
Preposterously far fetched though the story is, there is plenty going on and a lot of tension, however, while Andrews and Gilmore are fine, and so is Kosleck. And there is also an excellent hand-picked collection of support actors to enjoy: Mona Maris, Martin Kosleck, Sig Ruman, Kurt Katch, Torben Meyer, Erwin Kalser, William Edmunds, Hans Schumm, Leonard Mudie and Christian Rub.
Also in the cast are Mona Maris as Carla, Martin Kosleck as Captain von Rau, Sig Ruman as Dr. Dietrich, Kurt Katch as Weiner, Erwin Kalser as Mr. Rudolph Hauen, Torben Meyer as Manager, William Edmunds as Hans Gruber, Hans Schumm as Gunther, Leonard Mudie as English prisoner George, Hans von Morhart as The Actor, Curt Furburg as Doctor, Henry Rowland as Pilot, and Christian Rub as Prisoner.
The original screenplay is by Steve Fisher and Jack Andrews.
