Alan Ladd stars in ‘an adventure which cowards quit early and weaklings never finish at all!’
Director John Farrow’s 1948 black and white Paramount Pictures drama Beyond Glory stars Alan Ladd as Captain Rockwell ‘Rocky’ Gilman, a mature West Point cadet whose honour is called into question when he is accused of conduct unbecoming by a rich cadet, Raymond Denmore, Jr (Conrad Janis), and court martialled.
‘Rocky’ is supported by the love of the widow (Donna Reed) of his old commanding officer Captain Daniels (Tom Neal) killed in action in Tunisia, in North Africa, whose death he thinks he may have caused.
Beyond Glory is interesting but minor and familiar stuff, quite capably made and acted. It is Audie Murphy’s début, as Cadet Thomas.
Also in the cast are George Macready, George Coulouris, Henry Travers, Luis Van Rooten, Harold Vermilyea, Tom Neal, Conrad Janis, Margaret Field, Paul Lees, Charles Evans, Geraldine Wall and Dick Hogan.
