Director Robert Altman assembles a lovely cast for the 1987 comedy Beyond Therapy, an incurable misfire film version of a stage play by Christopher Durang, who collaborates with Altman on the screenplay.
The scant story about analysts getting too close to the problems of their neurotic New York patients might have worked on stage but the famous names here cannot do a thing to save it.
Jeff Goldblum and Julie Hagerty star as Bruce and Prudence, who have a bizarre dinner date with their crazy therapists, and Bruce’s jealous, gun-toting gay lover Stuart (Tom Conti), and Stuart’s over-protective mother.
Beyond Therapy is beyond redemption, unfortunately, and an unusual washout for Altman in a slump period.
Also in the cast are Glenda Jackson, Geneviève Page, Cris Campion, Sandrine Dumas, Bertrand Bonvoisin, Nicole Evans, Matthew Lesniak, Louis-Marie Taillefer and Laure Killing.
Beyond Therapy is directed by Robert Altman, runs 93 minutes, is made by New World Pictures, Roger Berlind Production and Sandcastle 5 Productions, is released by New World Pictures (US) and Entertainment (UK), is written by Robert Altman and Christopher Durang, based on a play by Christopher Durang, is shot by Pierre Mignot, is produced by Steven M Haft, is scored by Gabriel Yared and is designed by Stephen Altman.
Beyond Therapy is available on a double feature DVD with Lust in the Dust [Region 1] [US Import].
