Director George Sherman’s 1948 Technicolor Western film Black Bart [Black Bart, Highwayman] tells the story of the celebrated dancer Lola Montez (Yvonne De Carlo) falling for the real-life cowboy bandit Charles E Boles, also known as Black Bart (Dan Duryea), during her American tour. But the Zorro-style rogue notorious highwayman Black Bart is busy robbing for kicks and planning to destroy the Wells Fargo company.
The amiable stars and nice support cast play this attractively crafted minor Western for fun and the result is rather amusing. Outlaw Jersey Brady (Percy Kilbride) tells the long-ago story of his ex-partner from his jail cell.
The original story by Luci Ward and Jack Natteford has nothing to do with the real Black Bart who robbed stages in a black hood, left messages in verse and was tracked down by a Pinkerton agent through his hankie’s laundry mark.
Also in the cast are Jeffrey Lynn, Percy Kilbride, Lloyd Gough, Frank Lovejoy, John McIntire, Don Beddoe, Ray Walker, Soledad Jimenez, Eddy C Waller and Anne O’Neal.
The film is partly shot in Kanab Canyon, Strawberry Valley, and Strawberry Point in Utah.
It is produced by Leonard Goldstein for Universal-International and was released by them on March 3, 1948.
Irving Glassberg shoots in lovely Technicolor.
It is written by Luci Ward, Jack Natteford, and William Bowers. Luci Ward and Jack Natteford previously wrote Badman’s Territory.
