Blindspotting **** (2018, Daveed Diggs, Rafael Casal, Janina Gavankar) – Movie Review

Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal write and star in the excellent bristling comedy crime drama Blindspotting as Collin and Miles, a couple of long-time best buddies, working as movers in the rapidly gentrifying Bay Area of Oakland. They are men with a van for hire, though you might think twice about hiring them.

Collin is just out of jail and has to make it through his final three days of probation to be a free man finally, but the events of these three days nearly get him back in jail, or dead, and force him to re-evaluate his relationship with the trouble-making, volatile Miles (Rafael Casal). Stuck at traffic lights, Collin witnesses a white cop shooting a black guy, causing him to miss his mandatory curfew, and leading to a series of other troubles. Then it runs out that Miles has a gun, which also leads to a series of other troubles.

Daveed Diggs plays Collin in Blindspotting.

Real-life lifelong friends Diggs and Casal come up with a relevant and entertaining movie that looks at friendship, race and class with provocation, perspicacity, humour and a sense of danger, shot against a fresh and flavoursome backdrop. Carlos López Estrada puts energy, imagination and backbone into his feature debut. But it is the warmth of the central buddy-buddy relationship that really makes Blindspotting work.
Blindspotting mostly runs in a documentary-style way, relishing the characters, situations and area of Oakland in a fresh and vibrant way, though, at odds with that, the shooting and the film’s climax are staged in an entirely different, stagey kind of way. It is an interesting mix.
Ethan Embry plays Officer Molina and Wayne Knight plays Patrick.
