Director W Lee Wilder’s 1960 British thriller film Bluebeard’s Ten Honeymoons stars George Sanders, who takes on the role of a real-life bride-murderer, the serial killer Henri Désiré Landru, a much-filmed subject that also notably provided Charles Chaplin with Monsieur Verdoux.
A perfectly cast Sanders, the supreme cinema cad, playing it for real, unlike Chaplin or Richard Burton in Bluebeard, brings genuine distinction to the project, and some of the women co-stars (Corinne Calvet, Patricia Roc, Ingrid Hafner, Jean Kent, Greta Gynt, Maxine Audley, Selma Caz) add lots of allure and lustre.
But the movie is held back by its ordinary production and the uncertain, lightweight work of director Wilder.
Also in the cast are Peter Illing, Sheldon Lawrence, Paul Whitsun-Jones, Keith Pyott, Jack Melford, Robert Rietty, Mark Singleton, Milo Sperber, C Denier Warren, Harold Berens, Ian Fleming, and Dino Galvani.
It is shot at Elstree Studios in London and on location in Paris.
The sets are designed by Paul Sheriff.
