Directors John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper’s 1993 horror compendium TV movie delivers three chilling stories of the ghoulish, gruesome, gory and gross – The Gas Station, Hair and The Eye. The director John Carpenter stars as a creepy weirdo coroner, who hangs around a morgue and reveals the stories of his fellow corpses. Tobe Hooper and Tom Arnold also appear as morgue workers.
The Carpenter-directed story one is about a serial killer stalking a gas station clerk (with Robert Carradine and David Naughton in The Gas Station).
The funny Carpenter-directed story two is a black comedy about the perils of hair transplants (with Deborah Harry and Sheena Easton in Hair). Stacy Keach plays balding Richard who goes to the clinic of Dr Lock (David Warner) for a revolutionary hair transplant treatment.
And the macabre Hooper-directed story three is a new version of the old yarn about a man given the eye of a murderer after a car accident (with Mark Hamill as the victim, Twiggy as his wife and Roger Corman as Dr Bregman in The Eye).
The trilogy makes for nasty but generally eerie and effective viewing.
Also in the cast are Alex Datcher, Molly Cheek, Wes Craven, George Buck Flower, Lucy Boryer, Dan Blom, John Agar, Charles Napier and Sean McClory.
RIP Tobe Hooper (25 January 1943 – 26 August 2017).
