There is plenty of zing and sparkle, and there are lots of laughs too to be found in director Alfred Santell’s engaging, fast-paced 1937 romantic comedy, with its two stars Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall on good form and Eric Blore on great form as Marshall’s snooty valet Butch.
So what have we here? Another heiress, another playboy, and another Thirties screwball comedy. Good!
This time it is Valentine Ransome (Stanwyck), a debutante from Texas, taking over aimless Jonathan Blair (Marshall)’s ailing shipping business to get him to the altar, by ousting his gold-digging actress fiancée, blonde bombshell Carol Wallace (Glenda Farrell).
Also in the cast are Etienne Girardot as Mr Meggs, Donald Meek, Frank M Thomas, Pierre Watkin, Sidney Bracey as Blair’s butler, Harold Goodwin as Blair’s chauffeur, George Irving, Larry Steers and Bobby Barber.
Breakfast for Two is directed by Alfred Santell, runs 68 minutes, is released by RKO, is written by Charles Kaufman, Paul Yawitz, Viola Brothers Shore, Jack Mintz and Lawrence Pohle, is shot in black and white by J Roy Hunt, is produced by Edward Kaufman and designed by Van Nest Polglase.
