Director Brian Gibson’s 1980 Breaking Glass stars rock star Hazel O’Connor, who is just fine in her big film role as Kate, a pop singer who can’t stand the heat, and she’s got the backing she needs in Phil Daniels as her manager Danny, Jon Finch as Woods and Jonathan Pryce as saxophonist Ken.
The story trots out all the clichés – rags to riches to disillusionment – but there is plenty of power in the performances, Gibson’s writing and direction and Tony Visconti’s music.
If the public had liked it more, the talented O’Connor might have become an acting star.
It is produced by Princess Diana’s lover, Dodi Fayed.
Also in the cast are Peter Hugo Daly, Derek Thompson, Ken Campbell, Mark Wingett, Gary Tibbs, Mark Wing-Davey, Hugh Thomas, Nigel Humphreys, Peter Tilbury, Janine Duvitsky, and Gary Olsen.
Hazel O’Connor won the Variety Club of Great Britain Award for Best Film Actor and BAFTA nominations for Best Newcomer and Best Film Score. The Breaking Glass album went Gold and was in the UK charts for 28 weeks, going to number five, and produced several hit singles, including the haunting ‘Will You’.
