The likeable 1989 crime comedy thriller Breaking In presents an unexpected pairing – Scotland’s Bill Forsyth directing and Burt Reynolds starring as the veteran professional safe-cracker Ernie who bumps into young amateur thief Mike (Casey Siemaszko), while also breaking in.
It is the start of an interesting but uneasy partnership, with old Ernie training the callow youth in all his tricks as an apprentice.
There is charm aplenty from John Sayles’s script and from Reynolds (in his first character part), and, though the yarn eventually fizzles out, the film is amusing and worthwhile.
Also in the cast are Sheila Kelley, Lorraine Toussaint, Albert Salmi, Harry Carey Jr, Maury Chaykin, Stephen Tobolowsky, John Baldwin and Eddie Driscoll.
It cost $6,000,000 and grossed $1,877,618.
It is shot in Portland, Oregon, notably at Oaks Amusement Park.
Breaking In runs 94 minutes, is made by Act III Communications, The Samuel Goldwyn Company and Breaking In Productions, is released by Samuel Goldwyn Company (1989) (US) and Castle Premier Releasing (1990) (UK), is written by John Sayles, is shot by Michael Coulter, is produced by Harry Gittes, and is scored by Michael Gibbs.
