Burglar * (1987, Whoopi Goldberg, Bobcat Goldthwait, G W Bailey) – Classic Movie Review 7444

Director Hugh Wilson’s 1987 Burglar wastes Whoopi Goldberg as Bernice ‘Bernie’ Rhodenbarr, a cat burglar and bookstore owner, wanted for a murder that she has only witnessed.

The dead body is found in a house she has successfully burgled, so off she goes to solve the mystery to evade being charged with murder and the burglary. Bobcat Goldthwait co-stars as her dog groomer friend Carl Hefler.

Despite Goldberg’s best efforts, this pathetic action crime comedy does not work either as comedy or thriller.

Along with Fatal Beauty and Jumping Jack Flash, Burglar is the worst of Whoopi.

Also in the cast are Bob Goldthwait, G W Bailey, Lesley Ann Warren, James Handy, Anne DeSalvo, John Goodman as Detective Nyswander, Barbara Simpson, Elizabeth Ruscio, Larry Mintz, Raye Birk, Vyto Ruginis, Eric Poppick and Scott Lincoln.

Of course the problem is the screenplay by Joseph Loeb III [Jeph Loeb], Matthew Weisman and Hugh Wilson, based on the novels by Lawrence Block.
