Can’t Buy Me Love ** (1987, Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson, Courtney Gains) – Classic Movie Review 10,437

Director Steve Rash’s 1987 Can’t Buy Me Love [Boy Rents Girl] is a pleasantly routine American teen comedy with a familiar plot about nerdy outcast senior year boy (Patrick Dempsey) hiring popular, beautiful high-school cheerleader girl (Amanda Peterson) for one thousand dollars to masquerade as his lover for a month so that he will be popular too.

Can’t Buy Me Love is sometimes more turgid than charming, but nice work from the likeable young star duo, as well as from the support cast, helps it over bumpy patches.

Its tendency to be soppy rather than sharp is a minus, but it has a decent sense of humour, a warm heart and a good spirit.

It is written by Michael Swerdlick.

Also in the cast are Courtney Gains, Seth Green, Tina Caspary, Sharon Farrell, Darcy DeMoss, Dennis Dugan, Cloyce Morrow, Gerardo Mejía, Eric Bruskotter, Cort McCown, Ami Dolenz, Max Perlich and Devin DeVasquez.
