Captain Pirate *** (1952, Louis Hayward, Patricia Medina, John Sutton) – Classic Movie Review 9377

Director Ralph Murphy’s 1952 swashbuckling action adventure Captain Pirate [Captain Blood Fugitive] is the improved Technicolor sequel to Fortunes of Captain Blood (1950) and is based on Rafael Sabatini’s novel Captain Blood Returns.

It again stars Louis Hayward as Captain Peter Blood, who swings into swashbuckling action when he is falsely accused of piracy and arrested but released by his woman, Dona Isabella (Patricia Medina), and his pirate crew from the old days. Wicked Captain Hilary Evans (John Sutton) has signed Hayward’s name in blood when he has raided ports, so Captain Blood has been set up and he must get the guilty man.

There are too many words and there is too little action, perhaps, but the acting is genial, the movie looks very pretty in Technicolor, and is fun when it gets going.

The screenplay by Robert Libbott, Frank Burt and John Meredyth Lucas is based on Rafael Sabatini’s novel Captain Blood Returns.

Medina appears with Hayward in four films: Fortunes of Captain Blood (1950), The Lady and the Bandit (1951), Lady in the Iron Mask (1952) and Captain Pirate (1952).

Also in the cast are George Givot, Rex Evans, Ted de Corsia, Charles Irwin, Rex Evans, Malu Gatica, Sven Hugo Borg, Robert McNeeley, Nina Koshetz, Lester Matthews, Sandro Giglio, Ian Wolfe, Jay Novello and Maurice Marsac.

Captain Pirate [Captain Blood Fugitive] is directed by Ralph Murphy, runs 85 minutes, is made and released by Columbia Pictures, is written by Robert Libott, Frank Burt and John Meredyth Lucas, based on Rafael Sabatini’s novel Captain Blood Returns, is shot by Charles Lawton Jr, is produced by Harry Joe Brown and is scored by George Duning.
