Director Tim Hunter’s little-seen 1982 Walt Disney Productions film Tex, adapted from one S E Hinton’s bestselling tales of troubled teenagers, is a rewarding, understated yarn about two brothers, Tex and Mason McCormick, in the American South-west, whose mother is dead and father absent, facing their responsibilities and ultimately resolving their differences.

Tex is exceptionally well played by the young Matt Dillon as Tex McCormick, with solid support Jim Metzler as Mason McCormick, Meg Tilly, Bill McKinney, Ben Johnson and Emilio Estevez.

It predates Francis Coppola’s two Hinton films, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, both with Dillon.

Also in the cast are Frances Lee McCain, Phil Brock, Jack Thibeau, Zeljko Ivanek, Tom Virtue, Pamela Ludwig, Suzanne Costollos, Jeff Fleury, Marilyn Redfield, Mark Arnott and S E Hinton.

The intelligent screenplay is by Charlie Haas [Charles S Haas] and Tim Hunter.
