Club Paradise *** (1986, Robin Williams, Peter O’Toole, Rick Moranis) – Classic Movie Review 7662

Robin Williams, Peter O’Toole, Rick Moranis, Jimmy Cliff, Twiggy and Adolph Caesar are in the tasty star line-up for director Harold Ramis’s 1986 comedy Club Paradise about a Chicago firefighter called Jack Monike (Williams) who retires to a Caribbean small island named St Nicholas and becomes resort owner Ernest Reed (Cliff)’s partner in turning a tumbledown Jamaican real-estate into a beach centre, Club Paradise.

The cast turns in the classy acts expected of them, particularly Williams who never gives a bad or boring performance, and the situation and location are enticing. Peter O’Toole plays Governor Anthony Cloyden Hayes.

Ramis previously directed Caddyshack (1980) and National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), so you know what to expect. And there is plenty of Cliff’s music to please his fans.

Also in the cast are Eugene Levy, Joanna Cassidy, Andrea Martin, Brian Doyle-Murray, Joe Flaherty and Steven Kampmann.

Club Paradise is directed by Harold Ramis, runs 104 minutes, is produced and released by Warner Bros, is written by Harold Ramis and Brian Doyle-Murray(screenplay), from a story by Harry Shearer (as Ed Roboto), Tom Leopold, Chris Miller and David Standish, is shot  by Peter Hannan, is produced by Michael Shamberg and is scored by David Mansfield.

It is one of three forgotten Robin Williams films made in 1986, the year before his breakthrough with Good Morning, Vietnam. The others are Seize the Day and The Best of Times.

It is the third film of Harold Ramis (1944–2014), who went on to direct Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family, MultiplicityAnalyze ThisBedazzledAnalyze That, The Ice Harvest and Year One.
