Club singer showgirls Connie (Nia Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) accidentally witness a Mafia hit in Chicago and have to go on the run from their boss’s killer. So they hide out as drag queens – and they’re a big hit at an L.A. gay club.
All those who adored Some Like it Hot, The Birdcage and Victor/Victoria will be in seventh heaven with this sparkling 2004 cross-dressing romantic farce with show tunes. With astonishing verve and pizazz, Nia and Toni bash out every gay musical anthem they can think of from Cabaret, Oklahoma and Cats to Yentl and Funny Girl and even to Hair.
Briefly a star after My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos wrote it, so she gives herself the best part, as well as all the lovey-dovey stuff with an expert romatic lead in David Duchovny as Jeff, a guy Connie (now masquerading as a woman) would like to be a woman with. Even so, Toni Collette upstages her in a performance of vivacious star power.
You’ll want to stand up and cheer both women, and they’ve even found room for Debbie Reynolds as herself in a special appearance as herself.
