Director Ralph Bakshi’s 1992 comedy fantasy animation film Cool World stars Kim Basinger as voluptuous femme fatale Holli Would, a cartoon fantasy figure who is desperate to escape the ToonTown of Cool World for life as a real human, and escape to Las Vegas to find the ultimate power, the Spike. Holli takes human form in Las Vegas and Cool World is a world where real people and cartoons collide.
What on paper must have sounded unbeatable (a film by the animator of Fritz the Cat, a cast including Basinger, Gabriel Byrne as cartoonist Jack Deebs and Brad Pitt as Frank Harris, and a thumping techno soundtrack) is in reality a complete disaster.
It was hyped as a Who Framed Roger Rabbit for adults, and if only it was! The film is badly animated, the script boring beyond belief, and the humour just isn’t funny.
It cost $30,000,000 and grossed $14,110,589 in the US.
