Director Tony Bill’s 1990 comedy Crazy People stars Dudley Moore as Emory, an advertising executive who goes crazy and ends up in a mental institution where the patients are of course saner than the staff.
Emory falls in love with another patient called Kathy (Daryl Hannah), and they all think up crazy adverts that tell the truth and impress Madison Avenue.
Moore and Daryl Hannah are naturally warm and funny, and there is a good support cast to back them up – Paul Reiser, J T Walsh, Bill Smitrovich, Alan North, David Paymer, Mercedes Ruehl, Danton Stone, Doug Yasuda, Ben Hammer, Floyd Vivino, David Packer and Dick Cusack.
There are some big laughs, but it is patchy and has awkward edges, and a mental institution is an uncomfortable setting for such high jinks.
Crazy People is noticeably less funny and less successful than other similar comedies of the era – What about Bob? and The Dream Team.
The writer is Mitch Markowitz.
The film’s 16 four-letter words edited out of TV version.
