Writer-director Roger Kumble’s 2000 prequel to his 1999 erotic thriller hit is a shade less good, but it is still provocative, amusing, stylish and properly hard-hearted.
Set a few years before the original, it follows the exploits of step-siblings Sebastian Valmont (Robin Dunne) and Kathryn Merteuil (Amy Adams) as they manipulate, plan to seduce and plot to destroy people involved with their posh New York school, Manchester Prep.
Both Dunne and Adams give strong, commanding performances, Mimi Rogers is excellent as Kathryn’s social-climbing mother, Tiffany Merteuil-Valmont, and Keri Lynn Pratt is most enjoyable as vulnerable virgin Cherie Claymon.
Also in the cast are Sarah Thompson, Barry Flatman, Teresa Hill, Barclay Hope, Tane McClure, David McIlwraith, Jonathan Potts, Casey Wilson, Deanna Wright, Ted Shackelford and Sean Patrick Thomas.
Rated R for strong sexual content involving teens, and for strong language.
Cruel Intentions 3 followed in 2004, with different personnel.
