Deported ** (1950, Jeff Chandler, Marta Toren, Claude Dauphin, Marina Berti, Richard Rober) – Classic Movie Review 11,418

Director Robert Siodmak’s 1950 Universal Pictures black and white film noir crime thriller Deported stars Jeff Chandler, Marta Toren [Märta Torén], Claude Dauphin, Marina Berti and Richard Rober.

After a US jail term for robbery, small-time gangster and racketeer Vic Smith aka Vittorio Mario Sparducci (Jeff Chandler) is sent back to the old country of Italy, where he concocts a scheme to get his loot into Europe. But his new-found love for the aristocratic widow Countess Christine di Lorenzi (Marta Toren), whom he was going to use for his plans, redeems him.

Deported is different and interesting, but it tells a very tall story, and the playing doesn’t help credibility. Writer-producer Robert Buckner rightly praised his own filming on location in Italy, as it is one of the film’s main virtues. Siodmak brings a little style and atmosphere to the production.

Much of the film was shot in Italy on location in Naples, Siena and Tuscany over five weeks in late 1949. Apart from Chandler and Torén, the cast came from Italy and France.

Chandler and Torén had appeared together in Sword in the Desert (1949).

Swedish star Märta Torén appeared in 11 American films, including Casbah (1948), Sword in the Desert (1949), One Way Street (1950), Deported (1950), Spy Hunt [Panther’s Moon] (1950), Sirocco (1951), The Man Who Watched Trains Go By (1952) and Assignment – Paris (1952), but died from a cerebral haemorrhage, aged only 31, on 19 February 1957.

Also in the cast are Claude Dauphin as Bucelli, Marina Berti as Gina, Richard Rober as Bemardo Gervaso, Silvio Minciotti as Armando Sparducci, Carlo Rizzo as Guido Caruso, Mimi Aguglia as Teresa Sparducci, Adriano Ambrogi as Father Genaro, Michael Tor as Ernesto Pampilone, Erminio Spalla as Benjamino Barda, Dino Nardi as Donadi, Guido Celano as Aldo Brescia, Tito Vuolo as postal clerk.
