Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo *** (1999, Rob Schneider, Oded Fehr) – Classic Movie Review 1470

1

Director Mike Mitchell’s excellently silly, 1999 bad-taste farce stars Rob Schneider as a hapless fish-tank cleaner and pool attendant who house-sits when the owner, a greasy, angry, exotic-fish-loving male gigolo (Oded Fehr, hilarious), is away abroad.

Schneider’s eyes are opened to a completely new way of life — and of making a living – when he and poses as his replacement in the bed department. He has no choice but to go into business as a male prostitute in order to earn enough money to repair the damage he’s caused while house-sitting.

There are funny moments throughout, even a few hysterical ones, and Schneider is spot on in his farcical performance. Schneider is spot on in his screenplay, written with Harris Goldberg.

William Forsythe, Eddie Griffin, Anja Bareikis, Gail O’Grady, Richard Riehle and Amy Poehler co-star.

Despite all the fun on screen, reviews weren’t all good, but it was very profitable, taking $93million on a $17million cost.

But the 2005 sequel Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo is probably best avoided.

It was the first film released by Happy Madison Productions, with  Adam Sandler as the film’s executive producer. Sandler shouts ‘Freak!’ and other insults in the film.

Oded Fehr is known for playing Ardeth Bay in the 1999 remake of The Mummy and its sequel The Mummy Returns, as well as Carlos Oliveira in the Resident Evil films.
