Lee Marvin is ideal as Jimmy Cobb, a brutal American bank robber on the run with several million dollars, hiding out with a French country family of farmers, who become fascinated by his almost magical presence as well as by his several million dollars.
Violence rears its ugly head in director Yves Boisset’s very decent, tough-toned 1984 French gangster thriller Dog Day [Canicule], which comments on the French enthusiasm for gangsters while pandering to it.
Marvin, Tina Louise and Juliette Mills fit in well with the impressive, iconic Gallic presence, like Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet, Victor Lanoux, Bernadette Lafont and Jean-Claude Dreyfus.
Also in the cast are Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Pierre Clémenti, Grâce de Capitani, Henri Guybet and Muni.
The screenplay is by Yves Boisset, Michel Audiard, Serge Korber, Dominique Roulet and Jean Herman, based on a novel by Jean Herman [Jean Vautrin].
Yves Boisset was born on March 14, 1939 in Paris.
