Director Lewis Seiler’s 1945 20th Century Fox black and white musical comedy Doll Face [Come Back to Me] stars Vivian Blaine, Dennis O’Keefe, Carmen Miranda, and Perry Como, along with Martha Stewart, Michael Dunne, Reed Hadley, George E Stone, Donald McBride, and Edgar Norton.
Stripper Doll Face (Blaine) makes it big on the Broadway stage as a proper actress-singer, partly due to her boyfriend-manager O’Keefe’s educational grooming and the publicity caused by a writer (Michael Dunne) he employs to ghost-write her book.
Based on a minor satirical play by Louise Hovick (aka the famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee) called The Naked Genius, it has plenty of showbiz atmosphere and sharp backchat. But it flags until the bright songs begin (‘Dig You Later’, ‘Red Hot and Beautiful’, ‘Hubba, Hubba, Hubba’) and the vivacious stars (Blaine, Miranda, Martha Stewart and Como) come out to sing them.
