Director Angela Pope’s 1989 BBC TV movie Dream Baby is a gritty comedy drama with tender moments. It is in the Letter to Brezhnev vein and is set in a run-down, poll tax-dodging area of Edinburgh.
Jenny McCrindle plays Annie, an unemployed woman who hopes that her lovers – nightclub owner Slick (Kevin McNally) and struggling artist Willie (Peter Capaldi) – will pay her off if she pretends to be pregnant. But instead both men propose marriage to her.
Good acting, sparky characters and crisp dialogue sustain the slim story-line in David Kane’s teleplay.
Also in the cast are Mandy Matthews as Sheena, Billy McElhaney as Hickey, Janette Foggo as Maureen, Ewan Stewart as DHSS man, Virginia Stark as Jenny, Billy McColl as Kenny, and Craig Ferguson as Big Mick.
It premiered in the UK on May 29, 1989.
Jenny McCrindle was born on September 19, 1968 in Clydebank, Scotland. She is known for the TV series Jute City (1991), Dream Baby (1989), the TV mini-series Your Cheatin’ Heart (1990), The Life of Stuff (1997), and The Acid House (1998). She died in Glasgow of complications from multiple sclerosis on October 26, 2014.
