Director Steve Carver’s 1976 movie Drum is an embarrassing, lurid, stop-at-nothing sequel to the 1975 Mandingo, based on the follow-up novel by Kyle Onstott, about the misadventures of an 1860 New Orleans whorehouse slave called Drum (Ken Norton).
Even talents as considerable as Warren Oates, Ken Norton, Isela Vega, Pam Grier, Yaphet Kotto, John Colicos, Brenda Sykes, Paula Kelly, Fiona Lewis and Royal Dano can make little headway with the tacky stuff.
It is set 15 years after the events in Mandingo.
Also in the cast are Lillian Hayman, Cheryl Smith, Alain Patrick, Clay Tanner, Lila Finn, Henry Wills, Donna Garrett, Harvey Parry, May R Boss, Ilona Wilson, Monique Madnes, Eddie Smith and S A Lewis.
Drum is directed by Steve Carver, runs 110 minutes, is made by Dino De Laurentiis Company, is released by United Artists, is written by Norman Wexler, is shot in Metrocolor by Lucien Ballard, is produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Ralph B Serpe, is scored by Charles Smalls and is designed by Stan Jolley.
