Co-writer/ director Ang Lee’s scrumptiously tasty 1994 foodie comedy film Eat Drink Man Woman [Yin shi nan nu] is set in his native Taiwan and was his calling card to world movie-making.

Shihung Lung stars as Chu, an old chef who lives in Taipei with his three single daughters, Jia-Jen (Kuei-Mei Yang), Jia-Chien (Chien-lien Wu) and Jia-Ning (Yu-Wen Wang). In between making impressive meals each Sunday, their relationships unfold. Appealing performances and Lee’s expert direction are the keys to the film’s success.

It is remade as the American film Tortilla Soup in 2001.

Also in the cast are Sylvia Chang, Winston Chao, Chao-jung Chen, Chit-Man Chan, Yu Chen and Ah-Lei Gua.

Ang Lee previously made The Wedding Banquet (1993) and followed it with Sense and Sensibility (1995).
