Comic Strip man, co-writer/ director Peter Richardson’s aggressively unpleasant black comedy Eat the Rich (1987) about a waiter called Alex (Lanah Pellay, aka Al Pillay) getting fired from a trendy restaurant called Bastard’s, where he returns with terrorists to serve customers on the menu.
There is some well aimed rage and the odd funny moment, but you would need Luis Buñuel to make this angry, tough-edged, irreverent satire work.
Of interest is the Motorhead rock score, the iconic Eighties cast and the cameos from Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, George Harrison, Sandie Shaw and Bill Wyman. It is Comic Strip’s follow-up to The Supergrass (1985).
Pellay’s performance in The Supergrass inspired Peter Richardson to write Eat the Rich as a vehicle for him.
Also in the cast are Nosher Powell, Fiona Richmond, Ronald Allen, Sandra Dorne, Jimmy Fagg, Lemmy Kilminster, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Peter Richardson, Robbie Coltrane, Sue Lloyd, Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Neil Cunningham, Neil Dickson, Jools Holland, Derren Nesbitt, Nigel Planer, Daniel Peacock, Miranda Richardson, Pete Richens, Angie Bowie, Kathy Burke, Katrin Cartlidge, Robert Carwithen, Sean Chapman, Miles A Copeland III, Hugh Cornwell, Les Bubb, Rene Bruchet, Simon Brint, Rowena Bentley, Dave Beard, Kevin Allen and Koo Stark.
