Most capable, attractive performances from Loretta Young and David Niven as sparring spouses enliven director Tay Garnett’s appealingly zany, above-routine 1939 screwball comedy film Eternally Yours.
Young plays an American heiress married to Niven’s British magician, who prefers to get up to his tricks than to be a Young lover.
Broderick Crawford, Hugh Herbert, Billie Burke, C Aubrey Smith, Raymond Walburn, ZaSu Pitts, Virginia Field and Eve Arden are arguably even more talented players than the stars, though unfortunately they get a lot less to do.
Director Garnett does his best with Gene Towne and Graham Baker’s fair screenplay, adding zest and pace, and a bit of extra wit and bite, with his lively handling. Garnett also has a cameo as the plane pilot.
Also cast are Ralph Graves, Lionel Pape, Walter Sande, Leyland Hodgson, Fred Keating, Hillary Brooke, Mary Field, Frank Jacquet, Paul Le Paul, May Beatty, Ralph Norwood, Tay Garnett, Billy Wayne, Douglas Wood, Dennie Moore, Edwin Stanley, John Rice, Claude Payton, Larry Harris, Dickie Jackson, Jack Greene, Dick Allen, Walter James, Al Hill, Eleanor Stewart, Evelyn Woodbury, Patricia Stillman, Doreen McKay, Luana Walters, Jack Perrin, Broderick O’Farrell, George Cathrey, Granville Bates, and Franklin Parker.
