Writer-director Werner Herzog’s 1970 black and white comedy drama Even Dwarfs Started Small [Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen] tells the story of a group of dwarfs at a correctional facility who start a riot and rebel against their keepers.

Even Dwarfs Started has a great title, though this interestingly strange parable movie is not one of the great wayward German director’s finest.

Its central thrust seems entirely obvious, but the rest is very dense and hard to penetrate, and the amusing black comedy of the start tails away, and the film ends in a whimper not in a big bang.

Even Dwarfs Started is worth a look as a fascinating oddity, though, none the less.
